What is the Electrum Wallet?

Electrum was the wallet of choice in 2011, its pre-eminence has been eroded somewhat but it's still a tasty contender. The free Bitcoin wallet can be installed on most desktops and as of August 2016 became available on the Android platform.

Luckily, Electrum is available in a light-weight version so no need to download the entire blockchain as with other desktop wallets.
